MTF is pleased to announce that it has added a second location in Canatuan to its school building project and will now build two schools for underprivileged kids in Siocon, Zamboanga del Norte on the island of Mindanao, in the Philippines.
MTF initiated its school building project thanks to the fundraising efforts of the MGMT 4431 Leadership Development Class at Mount Royal University who successfully raised funds to build a school in village of Busicong, Siocon, Zamboanga del Norte. Because of this project, MTF has been able to join forces with The Petron Foundation, TVI Resource Development Inc., the USAID Equals program, Habitat for Humanity, and Save the Children Foundation. Our partners have agreed to build a second school in Canatuan to match MTF’s commitment to build a school in Busicong.
The Petron Foundation is the corporate social responsibility arm of the Petron Corporation, the largest oil refining and marketing company in the Philippines. It has joined efforts with the United States Agency for International Development/Philippines (USAID) and a coalition of five Philippine organizations called Education and Livelihood Skills Alliance or ELSA to build schools in the most conflict-affected areas in Mindanao.
In early September, Habitat for Humanity conducted site visits to both the school locations in Busicong and Canatuan and completed its assessment report. The MTF partnership group is targeting building of both schools in November 2010 with completion anticipated 90 days.
Stay tuned for updates.
